Q What is ArteFill®?

A: ArteFill® is the first and only FDA-approved permanent injectable filler for the enduring correction of wrinkles known as smile lines. It contains 20% ArteFill® Precision-Filtered Microspheres™ (made of PMMA, the same material used for dozens of medical purposes over the last century), 80% ArteFill® Purified Bovine Collagen™ gel, and lidocaine (an anesthic).


Q: How is ArteFill® different from temporary dermal fillers?

A: ArteFill® is different because it is permanent. Temporary fillers are absorbed by the body and require frequent repeat injection to regain the cosmetic effects. ArteFill® is formulated with tiny microspheres that provide a lasting support for wrinkle correction. With ArteFill®, you get both the immediate cosmetic benefits of the injected collagen and longer-lasting, continous wrinkle correction. Where the results of temporary fillers end, the enduring benefits of ArteFill® continue.

Q: How does ArteFill® work?

A: ArteFill® is the only dual-acting injectable wrinkle filler. The injected collagen visibly corrects the wrinkle. The tiny microspheres provide the permanent support your skin needs to sustain the wrinkle correction.

ArteFill® fills the gaps, raising the skin to its normal height. Therefore, filling the depression that created the wrinkle or fold.

The procedure is done in the doctor's office. Over time (2-3 months), your body will permanently anchor ArteFill® for a long-lasting effect.

ArteFill® contains an anesthetic that works at the injection site to minimize post-treatment discomfort.

There may be some minor swelling, redness, tenderness or itching, lasting for a short time.

ArteFill® has an excellent safety record with less than 0.1% incidence of sensitivity reactions.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR ArteFill® PATIENTS

ArteFill® is an injectable implant used to treat facial lines, enlarge lips, fill in facial imperfections, and diminish nasal labial folds. The product is permanent.
ArteFill® is purchased by the syringe and the amount required depends on the degree of correction required. This can usually be determined by Dr. Adelglass. It is important to remember that the complete effect of the implant will not be apparent for up to three months. If you desire further correction, you must wait for that amount of time before booking another appointment to purchase additional ArteFill®. No follow-up is otherwise required.
There is no sedation or local anesthetic required and patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after their treatment. The effects of the topical anesthetic applied to the treated areas are temporary and sensation will return within an hour of the treatment.
After your ArteFill® treatment some redness or swelling may occur. This can be treated with ice and will last from a few hours to a few days. Bruising, while infrequent, usually lasts 1-2 days, although this varies from patient to patient. Again, ice can be applied should bruising occur. It is possible that after the swelling has gone down, the results of the injection may seem to diminish. This is a normal occurrence resulting from the collagen component of the ArteFill® being reabsorbed by your body. The desired results will be evident over the several weeks as your body manufactures your own collagen capsules around the individual particles of the injected polymethylmethacrylate contained within the ArteFill®.
